Reorganization of rural education resources in Qilihe of Lanzhou

Qilihe district is located in Lanzhou city, capital of Northwest China's Gansu province. It  has successfully withdrawn from the country's poverty list since it launched a campaign for poverty eradication in 2015.

During the past few years, a rising number of local young people have left their hometown to find work in far-off cities because of the coordinated development between urban and rural areas. Meanwhile, rural schools have witnessed a persistent decrease in students. Children left behind by their parents at home are lonely and their teachers lack enthusiasm in work.

The Lanzhou No 29 Middle School in Qilihe faced such difficult conditions until the local Party committee and government decided to transform it into a nine-year boarding school at the end of 2020. The school became a new campus for over 200 students and 33 teachers from seven elementary schools.

The new campus immediately grabbed the attention of students, parents and teachers, who had lived and worked in remote areas in the past, on the first day of their new semester. It boasts bright and spacious classrooms, tidy and clean offices, comfortable dormitories and well-arranged daily necessities. Also, there are staff responsible for taking care of students in daily life. A number of school buses run regularly between the school and the homes of its students, improving overall services for the latter.

In addition, the reorganization of education resources has been conducted in 26 elementary and secondary schools, as well as independent teaching posts across the entire district. About 400 students have been moved to nearby schools in accordance with the will of their parents, and 135 teachers have been dispatched to relevant schools. Over 2 million yuan ($312,612.35) has been invested to improve facilities and give a facelift to campuses of involved schools.

All boarding schools in the district have been equipped with professional teachers to provide gratitude-oriented companion and psychological counseling services to target students, especially lower-age ones who are inclined to suffer from anxiety and other mental problems induced by boarding, in a drive to help them better adjust to their new life and receive the education of love, as well as intensive care amid academic studies.

The reorganization of education resources in rural areas of Qilihe has already shown positive effects. Formerly vacant campuses have been transformed into practice bases, where rural students can receive education on revolutionary history and traditions, and national defense. Many urban students have been encouraged to study at rural schools. The efforts to reorganize local rural education resources have profoundly promoted the coordinated development of education in urban and rural areas and laid a solid foundation for rural revitalization in the district.
