In recent years, the city of Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has prioritized ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. With a cumulative investment of 800 million yuan ($109.8 million), the city has completed a series of wetland restoration projects.
The wetlands along the Yellow River in Lanzhou's urban section cover a total area of 1,733 hectares. These wetlands are rich in biodiversity, featuring 208 species of wetland plants such as weeping willow, tamarisk, reed, and cattail. Monitoring efforts have recorded 68 species of wetland birds. Among them are three species classified under China's national first-level protection list. Dominant wintering waterfowl populations include species like the common goldeneye, mallard, spot-billed duck, goosander, and common gull.
As night falls, a spectacular display of lights illuminates landmarks such as the Yellow River Tower and Zhongshan Bridge, offering visitors a dazzling visual experience. A diverse range of nighttime attractions—including themed performances, open-air cinema screenings, and vibrant night markets—adds to the area's dynamic charm.
At present, the banks of the Yellow River in Lanzhou have become more than a scenic attraction; they serve as a vivid showcase of the city's image and a gateway for visitors to explore the culture of the Yellow River, the Silk Road, and Lanzhou's rich historical narratives.
